Paxico via Mexico

Paxico via Mexico might sound like a 936 mile route from outside of Topeka Kansas to the Mexican border near Laredo or it might sound like something fresh and new on the music scene in Gainesville, Fl. While road-trips are a blast and offer hours on end to listen to great music and sample bad coffee and greasy food along the way, “Paxico via Mexico” can only be heard on MySpace at the moment. And while there are (currently) only four tracks on-line you may still find yourself listening for hours on end.

Society Promotions is excited about this new band and its sometimes haunting tunes and always thought provoking lyrics. But is this a new band? This is no weekend garage band who had this bright idea to start their own band after attending a concert at 1982 or Market Street Pub. No this band has a mysterious maturity about it.

The facts of the matter are that Paxico via Mexico is made up of five great musicians all of which have played in bands before – Ricky Kendall, the lead singer, and Geoff McQueen, drums, are surviving members of an old favorite of mine, Jukebox Wagon. And if you’ve had an ear for Jukebox your ear will be quite pleased with Paxico via Mexico. But don’t think them the same band with a new name! Paxico via Mexico stands on its own. And from what I’ve heard so far, they stand pretty tall.

The first song on the MySpace playlist, My Dear Suspicion, is an older song of Ricky Kendall that has been re-worked with a smooth tone and relaxed vocals. The lyrics draw you in as if your being read a great novel. Even if you’ve heard this song a hundred times, you haven’t heard it like this.

Seven Four” is an instrumental song that is labeled “ROUGH” on the playlist. Yeah, it’s a little rough but it is also a light and relaxing song that has hints of an Almond Brothers jam session. I can’t wait to hear a more refined version of this song.

Go from a Jam track to a hard hitting bluesy number in Peace with God which holds no punches as to the underlying spirituality of these guys. I’ll refrain from sounding too cliché with stories about how they’ve struggled. Just listen to the song for a sense of hope in your heart and a happiness in your ears.

Burning Summer is my favorite. A light and fresh melody and rhythm that had me lightly bobbing my head and wanting to sing along (a few more plays and I’ll have the lyrics down).

Overall I like what I’m hearing, but I’m wanting more…

OH, and by the way. The best news about Paxico via Mexico is that you can catch them LIVE in concert at 1982 (map to 919 W. Univ. Ave) on Tuesday, Oct 21st @ 9pm ($6 cover for over 21 / $7 for under)
