Gearing up for the Fall

[Salutation] Hey y’all!

[Intro] We here at Society Promotions are wiping the summer out of our eyes and gearing up for the Fall. This means more exciting and meaningful (we hope) art experiences to benefit the city we love.

And what a city it is…I feel like I’m am watching this place grow up overnight. What do I mean by that? I mean that just as a kid who is maturing into adulthood starts to realize that there is more to life than just “ME”, I see that Gainesville is starting to bubble over with enthusiasm about being community minded and outward focused. The number of non profits and charitably focused groups seems to be growing exponentially…and so is the number of people who have expressed to me a desire to be a part of a movement, a cause, a SOMETHING that will change the world around them. This speaks to what I believe to be a yearning inside of everyone to be a part of something bigger than themselves, whether a cause or team or club or whatever.

So if you are one of those people who wants to scratch that itch, let us know and we will be happy to show you the opportunities right here in town to make a difference.

Really, you just have to check it out. It’s DAYTUM, and it is here to beautifully categorize the data that is your life. It’s a bit hard to explain, but if you have a few extra minutes, or feel the need to see how every minute of your day fits into a piechart, you should definitely take a look.

It’s hard to believe, but Gainesville’s best coffee, tea, and chocolate shop has been around for 2 years already. It’s almost ridiculous that a place like Volta even exists in a small town like Gainesville. There are so few businesses in this town that operate with the excellence and attention to detail that Volta demonstrates on a consistent basis.

On 30th April–a Downtown ArtWalk Friday–Volta will be celebrating its birthday with special evening of fun and goodness. More details to come…

Good Brands of 2010

New York-based PSFK, a trends and innovation research company, just announced its “Good Brands of 2010.” In the context of contemporary American capitalism, it’s refreshing to see companies being rewarded (or awarded?) for doing something other than making money. PSFK names its “Good Brands” based off the following criteria: imagination, innovation, environmental responsibility and social consciousness.

You should definitely check out the page, but to give you a preview, here’s who they picked (not a huge surprise, but some unexpected choices–they explain):

Podcasts, Fashion Week, etc…

It’s been a couple weeks since Gainesville Fashion Week but I did want to mention what a great event it was and what a fantastic job the organizers did this year. I really see it becoming one of the signature events of this town in years to come if it continues to progress that it has. As you may know, we set up and recorded audio for SoProRadio on the closing night at the Vault. Go over to the podcast page if you want to hear some of that.

Speaking of which…we now have a podcast page. On it we will post clips from the weekly SoProRadio show on 94.7 FM WGOT-LP (airs on Saturdays at 5 pm) and we will also post occasional podcasts of new audio, depending on our mood.

Reclaimed Art

Most discarded objects such as plastic toys, utensils and metal objects will fall fate to an eternity in a landfill, but artist Sayaka Ganz sees a second life in them. In a move for both the planet and art, Ganz recovers all of this junk and upcycles it into animal shaped sculptures. Meant to depict animals caught in motion, at a distance the sculptural effect is certainly striking – one look and you can’t help but think you’ve just caught a real life leap or swoop frozen in time.

The latest, if you haven’t already heard, comes via Kutiman, an Israeli Web impresario who mashed up video clips of amateur YouTube musicians to create a near-flawless overture to the Twittering masses.
