What is Art?

I spend an inordinate amount of my time trying to figure out a definition of this thing called ‘art’ to which I’ve dedicated large amounts of my life. I like to twist a phrase from Supreme Court Associate Justice Potter Stewart, “I might not be able to describe art but I know it when I see it.” But as much as I’d like to think the world revolves around me, that statement sounds too subjective.
Milton Glaser, the graphic designer who is known for the iconic “I Love New York” Logo, has spent a career living in the space where fine art and design intersect. So his opinion carries some weight…and this is what he says:
